What is the Material Balance & Heat Balance Pack?
The Material Balance & Heat Balance Pack consists of software based on a dynamic simulator as the main teaching material, together with supplementary materials such as workbooks that help trainees better understand the course content and instructor slides developed so that instructors can teach the material clearly. Understanding the material and heat balances within process equipment is fundamental to equipment design, and is also highly important in day-to-day operation management. This pack provides a Combustion Process (Boiler) and a Simplified LNG Terminal Process as training models.
Target Processes
Combustion Process (Boiler)
In the Combustion Process (Boiler), trainees learn stoichiometry, which is the basis for understanding chemical change, and acquire an understanding of material and heat balances through the relationship between heat generation from combustion and steam generation in the boiler.

Simplified LNG Terminal Process
In the Simplified LNG Terminal Process, trainees gain an overview of plant operating conditions from the material balance of the whole plant and around each item of equipment, and learn first-hand that operation management of the entire facility is carried out on the basis of material balance, as well as how to develop optimal operating methods according to available feedstock and product demand.
Target Users and Expected Benefits
This pack aims to help plant operators and process engineers with limited field experience, as well as staff in indirect departments who work closely with the production site, deepen their understanding of the concepts and activities applied in plant operation. Target users are:
- Those who want to gain knowledge of calculations used routinely at the production site, such as stoichiometry, unit conversion, and process flow rates
- Those who want to learn the basics of building cost awareness and improving efficiency in production processes
